Raccoons are just like any other wild animal. They seek out food, shelter and water to survive and safe place to raise their young.
Food, Shelter & Water – are you the enabler?
Food – Trash, pet food, bird seed, gardens, fruit trees, insects, and other readily available food sources can attract raccoons. Easy and consistent meals are just one of the primary reasons they selected your location.
Shelter – Attics, crawlspaces, chimneys, sheds, decks, trailer skirting, crawlspaces and other protected areas can provide places for raccoons to rest or raise young. Anywhere they can feel safe from the weather and other animals without harassment, they will build a nest and consider it their new home.
Water – Pools, lakes, ponds, bird baths, pet bowls, drainage areas and other water sources can make a property attractive. Raccoons are known to carry food items to a water source and wash the food before consuming it.
You need to understand what attracts them, then see what keeps them coming back.
Small Entry. Big Problem.
Raccoons are excellent climbers and remarkably capable of exploiting vulnerable areas around a structure. Once inside, they can damage insulation and other building materials, contaminate areas with urine and feces just like a rodent. They also create additional damage around the entry point they continue to enter, making your house vulnerable to rain water intrusion as well. That’s why scratching or movement coming from an attic shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as “something outside.” If you hear something above you at night, it’s worth finding out what it is.
The Problem Isn’t Going Away on Its Own
Catching an animal or two may address the immediate problem, but it doesn’t necessarily address what attracted the animals to your property. If food & water remains accessible and the entry point remains unsecured, another animal may eventually take advantage of the same opportunity.
A more complete approach considers:
What’s attracting them?
How are they getting access?
Where are they traveling to and spending their time?
What can be done to reduce the chances of the problem happening again?
